Yes, Siren Fest is a sight to behold, jangle pop, shoot-the-freak, fried clams, and all. This year's lineup offers an excellent cross-section of contemporary rockers, including ex-Pavement project Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Montreal ensemble Islands, up-and-coming indie-folkies the Dodos, and more than a few others. Large crowds are the norm, but fear not: the beach is but a few steps away, and indie fans can always use some sun.

Curated by style-for-the-people outpost agnes b., the electro-leaning bill toes the line between dance music and pure pop, with an oddball spirit that befits the avant-garde surroundings. Theremin player Dorit Chrysler presents an engaging concoction of new composition, balladry, and electronic meandering, while Au Revoir Simone steer things in a more hummable direction with the aid of a few Casiotone keyboards. London DJ Danton Eeprom, meanwhile, brings Warm Up back to its disco-house comfort zone.

Since 1998's quasi-objects LP, which exclusively relied on found sounds, Matmos have crafted entire albums based on literary and historical concepts — 2006's excellent The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast is a collection of abstract "sound portraits" of luminaries such as Ludwig Wittgenstein, William S. Burroughs, and Patricia Highsmith. Their recent Supreme Balloon, however, is a more joyous, less cerebral affair, replete with retro-future synths, and cheeky bloops and bleeps. Tonight, expect an abundance of digital noise, quirky melodies, and the same playful charm that made the group's intellectual bravado bearable in the first place.

Though the incessantly touring quartet are now in the studio, finally laying down a debut LP, they take a break tonight to lay down their funky, falsetto-fied jams on an actual audience. Think Prince… on quaaludes. Openers Murder Mystery mine a different era with simple and pleasing '50s-tinged indie-pop. The Black Ghosts play what they've deemed "perverse, personal pop music," blending crisp production with finely tuned dance-floor sensibilities. Tonight, they take to the stage with Lord on vocals and Theo Keeting (formerly of the Wiseguys) improvising the group's cuts on samplers and sequencers.
