Film Being There (1979)

Being There, director Hal Ashby's odd stab at political satire, revived Peter Sellers' curious career before his death. The plot orbits around an innocent gardener named Chance — or, as Eve Rand (Shirley MacLaine) mishears, Chauncey Gardiner — who has gleaned most of his worldly knowledge through television. After the death of his benefactor, Chance is thrown into a real-world whirlwind when Eve and her Washington-insider husband strike up a friendship with the well-dressed wanderer. People begin to interpret Chance's simple (and gardening-inspired) observations as deep insights, and an "emperor's new clothes" situation ensues.
